Marine Ball, Year II

Normally I hate these things and would not have gone for a second year in a row if it wasn't for the fact that I actually had someone to invite and it is the only event in Kosovo that would enable us to dress up in formal attire and actually have a 'night out on the town'. The Ball is put on by the US Marines stationed to guard the American Office and all our diplomats here in Kosovo. All the top brass from KFOR and the American base attend along with select persons from the UN, international community, USAID projects and related local staff. More body guards and security then one usually sees since the head of the American office, USAID and key Generals are present. Not to mention all the trophy wives or girlfriends. The ladies look fantastic and are dressed in the proper evening attire. Most men have a weird combination of either suit, tuxedo and some type of military dress.

To no surprise Pranvera knew many more folks than I did. Old USAID co-workers, all the security (she apparently always forgot her ID so they knew her), present co-workers and just general friends. I knew a couple select contractors, USAID staff and that was about it. It appeared to be a much older, smaller and less energetic crowd than the year before. The cash bar was followed by an hour long ceremony of official greetings, rituals such as cutting the cake and of course some good ole military fight songs. As long as you don't take it too seriously, it can at least amuse. Dinner was average and we chatted with most those around us as we sat in long pre-arranged tables. I guess the only real excitement was from my colleague's crazy girlfriend who couldn't keep her mouth shut during the ceremony and was complaining out loud she wanted food or a smoke. Don't believe Pranvera's 4 year old niece would have behaved that way.

Despite all the weirdness we really enjoyed each others company and were able to get her to her feet for several dances, with the knee brace on. Can't wait till we can really kick it into high gear on the dance floor!!! Meanwhile, a full blown winter storm had rolled in while we were dancing the night away which almost kept us snow bound in Pristina for the rest of our 3-day holiday weekend. But I was determined to get away at all cost...
